We further our mission in several different ways. We visits schools, we partner with local organizations and we host open events for the community.

Summer Bee Bash

Each summer we hold a party with vendors, educational stations, an observation hive and a delicious honey-themed menu. It is always free and open to the public. In 2017, the event was held at The Durham Hotel during National Pollinator Week. We had an expert teacher discussing the importance of pollinator friendly flowers, the Granville beekeeper's association talking about everything bee and an organic t shirt maker based out of Durham sharing effects consumerism has on bees. We also had several tables for ourselves, one selling honey and the other was a raffle table. All proceeds from the raffle went to Bee Downtown Foundation. The winner received two spots on a tour and a gift basket. Part of the proceeds from the menu also went to our nonprofit leg. It is always a bunch of fun. We have found that people are eager to learn about our pollinators, so what better way to host an event in downtown Durham with plenty of opportunities to do so!

Elementary and Middle School Visits

This is one of our favorite things to do with Bee Downtown Foundation. Every week, we go to a different school with a clear observation hive and give a small lesson. We use Bee Downtown Foundation presentations and interactive activities. There are 100 questions and comments guaranteed each time we teach. We love it, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

East Durham Children's Initiative

The East Durham Children's Initiative aims to provide a pipeline of high quality services from birth until high school to ensure career or college preparedness. Over 40 organizations and community members collaborate with the organization to achieve this mission. The resources offered range from after school programs to family support to health and wellness services.

Bee Downtown Foundation is extremely grateful to be a part of this partnership. EDCI has their own hives with Bee Downtown, and throughout the year we have had the privilege of suiting up with some adorable 3 and 4 year olds.
